Space Aliens

Hi, friendly aliens in front of the Space Expo in Noordwijk ;) For each zodiac sign there seems to be one alien sculpture. I do not believe in zodiacs, but alien life forms are quite probable considering the huge number of stars and planets in our universe.

Is life only possible on Earth-like planets and what would alien life forms look like? Would they also be based on carbon and have a similar DNA mechanism to reproduce and evolve or would they look and function completely different? How (and why) did life start on Earth?
